Irene Riggs, a Stanford-bound senior from Morgantown High in West Virginia, reacts to being named the Gatorade Girls Cross Country Player of the Year. Riggs is the first individual in any sport from West Virginia to receive national honors from Gatorade in the 38-year history of the awards program, which includes more than 350 student-athletes receiving recognition as the best competitor in the country across 12 sports. She is also the first female athlete to win both the Nike Cross Nationals title and USATF Under-20 championship in the same two-month span. In addition, Riggs is a three-time Gatorade State Cross Country Player of the Year and two-time Gatorade State Track and Field Player of the Year in her career.
