DyeStat Discussions - EP820 - Irene Riggs
Published by
Irene Riggs, a Stanford-bound senior at Morgantown High in West Virginia and the reigning Nike Cross Nationals champion and USATF Under-20 cross country champion as well as the Nike Indoor Nationals 1-mile winner, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing April 8 in the invitational girls 3,200 meters at the 55th Arcadia Invitational at Arcadia High in California. Riggs ran the No. 2 indoor 3,200 time in U.S. prep history Feb. 5 by clocking 9:45.97 at the SPIRE Scholastic Showcase in Ohio. She is pursuing the national outdoor record of 9:47.88 achieved in 2018 by former North Rockland High of New York star Katelyn Tuohy. Riggs set the junior class national record and produced the No. 2 all-time outdoor 2-mile effort June 15 by clocking 9:50.72 at the Brooks PR Invitational in Washington. She reflects on winning the Nike Indoor Nationals mile title in 4:38.23 and examines her training since in preparation to race at Arcadia. Riggs also shares how she watched Dalia Frias of Mira Costa High in California set the 3,200 meet record of 9:55.50 last year at Arcadia and then being able to race her at Brooks PR, with Frias setting the national outdoor 2-mile record of 9:50.70. Riggs also analyzes the strength of the invitational 3,200 field, including Nike Cross Nationals runner-up Brooke Wilson of Valor Christian High in Colorado, as well as several other cross country and indoor All-Americans, and expresses gratitude for the opportunity to run at night under the lights in front of such a big crowd. She revisits placing 12th overall to help the United States capture a bronze medal March 11 at the World Under-20 Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia, and how meaningful it was to be part of the first American women's team in meet history to medal at that level. Riggs also looks forward to competing for Morgantown in late April at Penn Relays, where her future Stanford teammates will also be racing as well. More videos
